The George Hotel
Welcome to the George
The George Inn was established by the early 17th century. Central in the village, it's the quintessential rural pub, with a traditional bar, extensive outside seating, a large function room with bar, and comfortable accommodation. A minute's walk leads to Coleridge Cottage. On the doorstep are the Quantock Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) meaning its distinctive character, natural beauty and cultural heritage are so outstanding that it is in the nation’s interest to safeguard them.
Steeped in history
The George Inn was originally a building of the 16th century or earlier on the south side of St. Mary Street, and had a bowling green and a fives wall. It had closed by 1781 and was rebuilt in 1843 as a private house, which retains a yard of decorated cobbling. The current George Hotel had opened by 1804; in 1899 and 1906 it had assembly rooms where theatrical entertainments were given.
